Documents Required to Rent a Self Drive Car in Bangalore

Published 10 February 2026 · 5 min read · RegalCarz Team

The single most common reason a self drive car rental gets delayed at pickup is paperwork — someone forgets their original licence, brings a photocopy, or turns up with an ID that does not match the booking name. It is entirely avoidable. This guide sets out exactly which documents you need to rent a self drive car in Bangalore, the driving licence rules that apply, and what to have ready in your bag before you leave home for our Hoodi office.

Get these three things right and the handover takes minutes rather than an anxious back-and-forth of phone photos and forwarded messages.

The three documents you must carry

At RegalCarz the requirements are deliberately short, because fewer rules mean fewer things to go wrong. For every self drive car rental you need:

  1. A valid Indian driving licence that is at least one year old.
  2. Your original Aadhaar card or another government-issued photo ID.
  3. Proof, through those documents, that you are at least 21 years old.

All of these must be originals, presented in person at pickup. We verify them before handing over the keys, so a screenshot or a laminated photocopy will not do. Bring the physical documents and the whole process stays quick.

Driving licence rules explained

Your licence is the document we care about most, because it is what legally lets you drive the car. Two conditions apply. First, it must be a valid Indian driving licence — current, not expired. Second, it must be at least one year old, counting from the date it was issued. A brand-new licence, however genuine, does not meet the one-year rule.

The licence also has to belong to the person doing the driving. The renter must be the primary driver and must be present at pickup, so you cannot book a car on one person's documents and have someone else collect and drive it. If your plans involve more than one driver over a long trip, mention it when you book so we can advise you.

ID proof: Aadhaar and the alternatives

Alongside the licence you need one original government photo ID. An Aadhaar card is the most common choice and the easiest to produce, but any valid government-issued photo identification works. The name on your ID should match the name on your booking and your licence — mismatches are the sort of thing that slows down an otherwise smooth pickup. Keep the ID in your wallet rather than buried in checked luggage, especially if you are heading somewhere straight after collecting the car.

Age requirement: why 21 matters

You must be 21 or older to rent. This is a firm eligibility rule, not a guideline, and it works together with the one-year licence condition. In practice that means the youngest eligible renter is someone who is at least 21 and has held their licence for a full year. Your Aadhaar or photo ID doubles as proof of age, which is one more reason the originals matter.

A quick pre-pickup checklist

Before you set off for our office on ITPL Main Road in Hoodi, run through this short list:

That last point matters because the flat ₹1,000 deposit is collected at pickup and refunded within 24 to 48 hours of return. If you would like the finer detail on how it is handled, our explainer on the security deposit and fuel policy covers refunds and deductions in full. New to renting altogether? Our first-time renter tips walk you through the whole pickup, right down to the walkaround.

What happens at pickup

When you arrive, we verify your documents, complete a quick inspection of the car together, note the fuel level and hand over the keys. Because fuel is on a full-to-full basis, you will receive the car with a full tank. Keep your documents handy through the rental too — you are legally required to carry your licence whenever you drive, and it is sensible to have your ID on you for any trip outside the city. Frequently asked questions

Can I use a digital licence or DigiLocker copy?

We verify original documents at pickup, so please bring your physical licence and ID rather than relying on a phone copy. It keeps the handover fast and avoids any hitch.

Does the booking name need to match my ID?

Yes. The renter is the primary driver and must be present at pickup, so the booking, the licence and the photo ID should all carry the same name.

I am 21 but got my licence six months ago — can I rent?

Not yet. The licence must be at least one year old in addition to the 21-plus age requirement. Both conditions have to be met.

What if a friend wants to drive part of the way?

The person who books is the primary driver. If you expect additional drivers, tell us when you book so we can guide you on what is possible for your trip.

Sorting your documents in advance is the easiest win in the whole rental. Carry the originals, make sure the names line up, and your pickup at our Hoodi office will be quick and painless. If you are unsure about anything on the list, the RegalCarz team is happy to confirm before you travel — just reach out through the contact section and we will talk you through it.
