Security Deposits & Fuel Policy Explained: What You Actually Pay
Published 3 March 2026 · 5 min read · RegalCarz Team
Two parts of a self drive car rental cause more confusion than anything else: the security deposit and the fuel policy. Renters worry about hidden charges, wonder when their deposit comes back, and are not always sure how the "full-to-full" fuel rule works in practice. This guide explains exactly what you pay, when you get it back, and how to make sure you keep your entire deposit — no surprises, no guesswork.
At RegalCarz we keep both of these deliberately simple, and once you understand them, they are genuinely nothing to worry about.
The security deposit: a flat ₹1,000
The security deposit is a single, flat amount of ₹1,000, regardless of which car you rent. It is not a percentage of the rental, and it does not change between a Renault Kwid and a Toyota Innova Crysta. You pay it at pickup — by UPI, bank transfer or cash — alongside your rental amount, and it sits as a small safeguard against damage, missing fuel or overdue charges.
Think of it as a refundable holding amount rather than a fee. In the ordinary course of a rental where the car comes back on time, undamaged and with a full tank, the deposit is returned in full.
When and how the deposit is refunded
Your ₹1,000 is refunded within 24 to 48 hours of returning the car, once it has been inspected. That inspection is why the walkaround at both pickup and return matters so much — it confirms the car's condition and clears the way for a clean refund. The deposit is returned subject to deductions only where they genuinely apply, namely:
- Damage to the car during your rental.
- Missing fuel, if the tank comes back below full.
- Overdue charges, if the car is returned late beyond the grace terms.
If none of those apply — and for most renters they do not — you get the whole amount back within that window.
The full-to-full fuel policy explained
Fuel is handled on a full-to-full basis, which is the fairest and simplest system there is. The car is handed to you with a full tank, and you return it with a full tank. You pay only for the fuel you actually use, because you are topping it back up yourself before the handover. There is no fuel deposit to calculate and no estimating on our part.
The practical routine is easy: fill up near our Hoodi office shortly before you return the car, so the gauge reads full when we check it together. Keep the receipt if you like — it is handy peace of mind, though the gauge is what we read at return.
What happens if you return with less fuel
If the tank comes back below full, the shortfall is deducted from your deposit at the market fuel rate, plus a ₹100 service charge. That service charge exists because someone then has to take the car to refuel it. The lesson is simple and saves you money every time: top up to full before you return, and there is nothing to deduct. This is one of the easiest charges to avoid entirely, and it is a point we make in our list of common car rental mistakes to avoid.
How to get your full deposit back
Getting all ₹1,000 back is entirely within your control. Here is the short version:
- Do a careful walkaround at pickup and note any existing marks together, so nothing gets attributed to you later.
- Drive sensibly and avoid damage — remember that damages not covered by insurance are the renter's responsibility.
- Refuel to full before returning the car.
- Return on time, or arrange an extension at least four hours ahead if plans change.
Follow those four steps and there is simply nothing to deduct. Since documents and the deposit are both collected at pickup, it helps to read our guide on the documents required to rent a self drive car so you arrive fully prepared.
Late returns and overdue charges
Because overdue charges are one of the possible deductions, it is worth knowing how return timing works. The minimum rental is 24 hours. If you run late, the first two hours are charged at ₹100 per hour; beyond that, the full daily rate applies. Need more time? Request an extension at least four hours before your scheduled return and we will confirm whether the car is free. Planning your day with a little buffer keeps overdue charges off your bill entirely.
Kilometres and other costs to keep in mind
The deposit and fuel are separate from your kilometre allowance. Each rental includes 250 kilometres per day, and extra kilometres are chargeable — ask us for the current per-km rate if you expect a long trip. None of this touches your deposit unless it becomes an overdue or unpaid charge at the end, so settling everything at return keeps things clean. Frequently asked questions
Is the security deposit the same for every car?
Yes. It is a flat ₹1,000 whether you rent a hatchback, sedan, SUV or 7-seater.
How will I receive my refund?
Your deposit is refunded within 24 to 48 hours of return after the car is inspected, using the payment details you provide.
Do I pay for a full tank up front?
No. Fuel is full-to-full — you get the car full and return it full, paying only for what you use as you refuel it yourself.
What is the ₹100 fuel service charge?
It applies only if you return the car with less than a full tank. The missing fuel is charged at the market rate plus a ₹100 service charge for refuelling the car.
Deposits and fuel are not the mysterious part of renting — they are the easy part once you know the rules. Pay a flat ₹1,000, return the car full and on time, and you get your money back within a day or two.
